In a game played in some of the nastiest field conditions we've ever seen, Penn State escaped a big LSU comeback to win the Capital One Bowl, 19-17.
Despite dominating most of the game, the Lions only led 16-3 late in the third quarter, after they twice settled for field goals while close to the goal line earlier in the game. Then LSU, whose offense sputtered for most of the first three quarters, staged a furious rally, scoring twice in just over three minutes to take a 17-16 lead.
But the Penn State defense came up with a big stop in the fourth quarter, and Daryll Clark led a long drive, eating lots of clock, that resulted in a Colin Wagner field goal to put the Lions up for good, 19-17.
We have a feeling the field conditions will dominate the talk about this game, and we can already hear LSU and SEC apologists using the field as an excuse. And while the field neutralized any speed advantage LSU may have had, both teams had to play out there, and Penn State played better.
Kudos to the team on an 11-win campaign and to the seniors on a great four years. We'll have the full recap this weekend.
