Building the Tailgate, part III

(Tailgating is a big part of our football lives, we do it every game every year. We're going to make this tailgating themed article a regular thing where we pick up items we would want for our tailgate. We're going to to be going out of our price range, obviously, but we plan on staying within reason... somewhat. And please, point us in the right direction if you see something that should be part of any dream trailgate scenario.)
Read more to get to the meat of this thing.
As much as we love sitting in a field that is normally covered with poo, eating a drinking all day while we wait for the PSU game to start, we need something to keep us occupied while we're waiting for the Woot cooker to finish our beer chickens. For us, it's a variety of games. We bring our own cornhole equipment, but on the friendly roads of the RV lot, people wander around to play whatever games the neighbors might have out.
Every tailgate needs good games. Some people have washers, some ladder golf. If you watch the video in the right column (you have to go back to the main page) you can see some people playing a weird game involving a hammer and a stump. We'll probably stay away from that game in the future, because we're not really fond of carrying around a 50lb hunk of wood everywhere we go.
But as for the games you can find out there, we're going to run down the three we like the most, in no particular order.
First up, is ladder golf.

Tailgating on concrete; that looks fun.
If you haven't seen the game before, you can find everything you need at LadderGolf.com. This is a real simple game and one anyone can pick up and learn. Another nice part of the game is that just about anyone could get the directions and build the game for themselves. It doesn't take much other than a few PVC pipes and some golf balls. It's also probably a lot better alternative than paying the prices that many websites are asking for a set.
The premise of the game is simple. Throw the string and ball combo and try and land it one of the three rungs. We've seen different people score it different ways, but generally it's 3 points for the top rung, 2 for the middle and 1 for the bottom. The teams can cancel each others points out, and first to 21 wins. It's a fun game, and one we see little kids playing the most -- firing golf balls around $400,000 RVs all willy nilly. We don't have a set of our own, but it may be on the horizon.
Next is the game we're probably the least familiar with. The Washer Game.

Another simple game, although one we haven't played very often. There are also several varations of this game that include different shaped boxes, different levels of scoring like you may see on skee-ball and a completely different version that has 3 holes on a carpted wooden platform with each hole worth a different amount of points. If you want to see them all, they're right here on the front page at WasherGameWorld.com.
After cornhole, which is our personal favorite, this is probably the game we see the most out there. It's simple, small and there are so many different variations that it seems like everyone has a different version. For the ones pictured above, you just lay those boxes a few feet apart and throw the washer and attempt it to land it inside the circle. Different points are awarded for being in the circle or just in the box and first team to a certain amount of points wins.
And finally, our personal game of choice: Cornhole.

These guys need some better teammates.
Cornhole is our favorite and probably the most common game you see at tailgates. We have this one at every tailgate and the bags are flying the instant we touch down in the RV lot. If you don't have a set, you can find ones all over the internet, including TailgateToss.com. Our sets are custom, of course, pictured in both the photo above and at the top of the page. We encourage you to make your own to save money but if you need to order a set from somewhere make sure you get ones made from wood. We've seen ones made from plastic and other materials and they're just not the same. One of the drawbacks however is that cornhole, unlike some of the other games, does require a lot of space in both storage and playing area. The boards need to be placed 33' feet apart and it can be tough to store the big boards if you're coming in a car.
Now onto actually playing the game. Each team has four bags and depending on who you ask, the teams alternate throwing one bag at a time or each team throws all four of theirs, then the other throws. You get 3 points for putting a bag in the hole and 1 point for landing it on the boards. Like most other games, the teams cancel out each others points. So if Team A scores 6 points and Team B scores 3, the only points awared would be 3 points for Team A.
It's a great game and to some, it's a real art form. We really got embarrassed by some Ohio State guys a couple years ago who seemed to put every bag in the hole. Games can get pretty competative and it's always fun to be on the team that runs the board all day -- even against random passers-by who think they can steal a win.
So if you're heading up to a tailgate this year, make sure you bring yourself a few games to play and if you park near someone with something you've never seen before, there's a good chance they'd welcome some new blood into the game. We know we do.
And if you can't get your hands on any of these games by the time tailgate season rolls around, you can always buy a pack of Solo cups and start racking them up. Classics never get old.
