Penn State News Roundup

You're not going to believe this, but we actually dug up enough Penn State stories this week to keep the weekly links all PSU-related.  Given that, we hope you don't mind if we expound on the stories a bit more than usual.  Hell, we're happy if you've even made it here in the first place.  Click the link below to check it out.

As you may know, E!SPN.com's Big11Ten blogger, Adam Rittenberg, has been counting down the top 30 current players in the conference since spring practice ended.  This list shows that even the big-timers need to make up contrived shit to write about in the offseason.  But it also shows, if you take Rittenberg's word for it, that Penn State has a lot of high end talent.  With the list down to number three, PSU is well represented with five players, more than any other team on the list.  And Daryll Clark has yet to be seen, so that will give the Lions five of the top twelve.  The only question is whether he'll be number one.  We say yes, because he's arguably the player that means the most to his respective team.  We expect the other player on the list to be Illinois widout Arrelious Benn, as Rittenberg has an huge hard-on for him.

Speaking of Benn, Rittenberg also lists him on the short list of possible Heisman candidates from the Big11Ten this season.  To be fair, he does point out that Benn, despite putting up good reception and yardage numbers last year, has just five TDs combined in the last two season.  Ouch.  If that's not enough to hurt his chances, he plays for Illinois. Plus his name sounds like the first and last name got reversed.

Arrelious Benn

Arrelious, Benn

If Arrelious Benn is in New York as a Heismann finalist in December, we will shut down the blog.  We think Clark has the best chance out of anyone on the list.

In recruiting news, PSU picked up a verbal committment from 277-pound center Miles Dieffenbach.  We usually don't cover recruiting here too much - mostly because there are a lot of other places that do it better - but this story is sort of funny.  Apparently Dieffenbach, who hails from Pittsburgh and grew up a Pitt fan, decided against the Panthers after a visit to Happy Valley.  We understand that kids grow up liking Pitt, but if you're thinking about your future football career, how is this even a choice?  That's not even a jab at Pitt, it's just the truth.

Now we turn to JoePa news, of which there is quite a bit...

In case you missed it last week, Joe said that Navorro Bowman will not be suspended for his most recent off-the-field issues.  This is a bit surprising to us, and it doesn't send a very strong message, but maybe Joe just felt bad for a kid who had a lot of personal problems last year.  Who knows.  Let's just hope he has his head on straight for the start of the season.

If you were expecting a national championship run this season, then you might want to back up the truck.  Paterno says Penn State is a couple elite players short of this goal, namely two O-lineman and two defensive backs.  This may be the most obvious statement ever, but it's sort of refreshing because a lot of college coaches wouldn't come out and admit that; it's more likely they would dance around the question. We caught a little National Title Fever last year, but after watching the Rose Bowl, we realize the team isn't quite on that level.  But they've certainly made up a lot of ground over the last four years.

And finally, the folks over at Heisman Pundit, a generally well-respected site, have a list of the 10 most overrated coaches in college football.  Our own dear, sweet JoePa made the list at #4.  The primary reason they list is that Joe is no longer really running the team.  We have no argument there.  HOWEVAH, what they fail to mention, is that anyone who is remotely familiar with college football already knows that JoePa is really just a figurehead now, and thus he's probably not overrated at all.  We think, at this point, he's pretty accurately rated.  One commentor points out that it was insane to leave Charlie Weiss off the list.  We would agree, but again, does anyone really think Charlie Weiss is a good coach anymore?  What would Brady Quinn say about this?  If we had to guess, we would guess this:

Brady

"Now I'm done."

That's really the only thing we've ever heard him say.

We'll be back later in the week with our next tailgate item.
