If you thought the Big11Ten media days were just a boring forum for reporters to ask stale questions and for coaches to give stale answers, maybe you were wrong. There's a bunch of Penn State-related news coming out of media days, which kicked off yesterday in Chicago.
The first piece of news- and the one that seemingly everyone has been talking about- is that Joe mentioned in his press conference that A.J. Wallace and Abe Koroma may not be joining the team for camp, and their status after camp is very much in question as well.
Paterno said that Wallace had an issue with cutting classes, but didn't really go into any detail. He mentioned that Koroma was having some serious personal issues and that he wasn't likely to return to the team any time soon. David Jones from PennLive has the story.
If either of these guys misses time, it would obviously would be a blow to an already depleted defense. The defensive line rotation seems to be getting smaller and smaller, and Wallace is one of the guys in the secondary who actually has solid experience. Not good times.
However, David Jones also mentions that while the D could be a rough spot this year, the O-line is the real question mark. Can't say we disagree with him there. You can get by in the Big11Ten with a shaky secondary. You can't get by with a bad O-line.
As for preseason polling, the media picked Ohio State to be the conference favorite, with Penn State at #2. Adam Rittenberg says the Lions will jump at the chance to play the underdog card. This isn't a really a big deal, we're kind of glad they have the chip on their shoulder. The real travesty here is that the media picked Terrelle Pryor as preseason Offensive Player of the Year, over a host of other candidates who were better-suited for the honor. Luckily, winning preseason awards means absolutely dick.
On a lighter note, when Joe was lamenting the media at one point, he came out with this great quote:
"You guys have to talk about something. The fans have got to put something on those, what do you guys call those things, Twittle-do? Twittle-dee? I haven't got the slightest idea what you're looking at."
Why anyone would want the man to leave when he continues to give us quotes like this one is beyond us. Of course, we all know that he knows exactly what twitter is.
By the way, you probably saw David Jones pop up a couple times in this post. We have to mention that David Jones is crushing right now at PennLive. If you want good coverage of media days, just head over there. Jones popped up on the In The Bleachers podcast that we linked to last week and called Brett Bielema a "dumbass frat-boy." If that weren't enough, today Jones has a post about how Bielema and DickRod bombed with jokes at the media day podium yesterday. Guess what, David Jones? You're our new favorite writer.
