This is a story that you probably weren't taught in Sunday school. Joe Paterno didn't simply find his own way to Penn State after graduating from Brown. The story of Joe finding Happy Valley goes back way before that. As you can see from this famous painting above, what actually happened was that when God was bored after creating all living things, he wanted to see some good football. So, naturally, he decided to create Joe. Thus the young Joe was sent on a mission from The Man Himself to bring football wisdom the masses. Here's how it went down between The Big Man and Joe:
God: "Go, my son, to State College. Bring your football knowledge to Penn State University."
Joe: "Yessir, your righteousness, they have a great bunch of kids out there. Any advice for the job?"
God: "Concentrate on defense, especially linebackers. And when a kid named Morelli wants to play quarterback, sign him immediately."
Joe: "You got it, big guy. I'm off!"
And so it was that Joe would come to Penn State and eventually become the legendary coach that he is now. And, as you can see in the picture, Joe took God's actions to heart. You see, God didn't throw that football to Joe, he handed it off. God is a big believer in the running game. He thinks you should commit to the run, and pass when necessary. God's a huge Big11Ten guy. Is it any wonder that Joe has followed this philosophy pretty much his entire career? We think not. But still, even God lost a little faith in the run after the '79 Sugar Bowl.
And as for Morelli? Well, even God's not perfect.
